Sofa Bug for Burning Man

The SofaBug was born to cruise the desert during the BurningMan 2000 festival. SofaBug is based on the CalTopBug, but pretty heavily modified to fit one full size sofa inside and another sofa onto the back of the bug.

I cut the roof off a ’74 Super Beetle, removed the doors and windows, move the B column 2ft to the back to fit the inner sofa. The upper sofa is mounted on a 4’x8′ “living room” plaform which in turn is affixed to a 4’x4′ steel frame. To the sides of the sofa I mounted bedside tables, with a stereo on top, and a light fixture.

It was the perfect party mobile for the event. I counted up to 24 people on the car.
