My Electric Vehicle Conversion
I am quite a fan of electric cars. Electric motors are much more efficient than the old combustion engine, and while we still need plenty of energy to move a car, we can stop burning oil and use cleaner means to produce electricity.
I decided to convert my 1972 VW Van from ICB to EV over the next weeks. I have done my research and I believe I found a good enough solution to get this thing on the road.

Ich mag Elektroautos. Elektromotoren sind einfach wesentlich effizienter als der alte Benzinmotor. Und obwohl auch ein E-Auto viel Energie benötigt, können wir doch zumindest aufhören, Öl zu verbrennen und Strom anders erzeugen.
Ich habe mich entschieden, meine VW Bus von 1972 von Benzin auf Strom umzubauen. Ich habe meine Hausaufgaben gemacht (und nicht abgeschrieben) und glaube, eine gute Konfiguration gefunden zu haben.

Making a Plan – Planung
I started looking into EVs in 2009, but I was not happy with the parts available. Finally, in 2010, after finding a nice VW Van without an engine, I decided to do my research. This is what I found out.
Ich interessiere mich für einen E-Auto-Umbau seit 2009, aber fand die erhältlichen Teile nicht gut genug. 2010 fiel mir ein VW Bus ohne Motor in die Hände, und die alte Idee flammt wieder auf. Und so hab ich es dann gemacht.
Getting the Parts – Teile finden
It’s nice to know what you want to build, but it’s hard to get the actual parts together. I live in Germany, so ordering parts from outside of the EU will be expensive. Within the EU, rules for getting cars Street Legal are very tough. As a result, there are very few suppliers. They are actually getting less, because restrictions and cost for testing are ruining their business in Europe.
Ich weiss zwar, was ich bauen will, aber die Teile zu finden ist schwer. Es kostet viel Geld, Teile nach Deutschland von ausserhalb der EU zu importieren. Innerhalb der EU sind die Strassenverkehrsgesetze grotesk limitierend, so dass es hierzulande kaum Händler gibt. Die wenigen Hersteller, die sich nach Europa trauen, gebe aufgrund der horrenden Preise für technische Prüfungen bereits wieder auf.

Testing, testing, testing
OK, the car drives just fine, but many problems remain unsolved. With a temporary license plate, I was able to do some testing. Here are the results.
Gut, der Wagen fährt prima, aber es sind noch viele Detailprobleme ungelöst. Mit gelbem Nummernschild geht’s nun ab und an auf öffentliche Strassen. Und das kam dabei heraus.
Making it Street Legal – Bis das der TÜV uns scheidet…
We are entering phase 5: registering. Now that the car runs just fine, I have to make it ready to go to the state technical inspection (TÜV) in order to get a license palte and registration.
Jetzt geht’s in Phase 5: Zulassung. Jetzt, da der Wagen prima fährt muss ich alles TÜV-fertig machen und perfektionieren.

Das mit dem TÜV hat dann wohl so überhaupt gar garnicht geklappt.
