Wir haben da ein Problem…
I was so focused on all the conversion issues that I completely neglected to look at the car itself. The photos show only very little on how bad the actual damage is. The entire rear left panel is junk. All bottom edges consist of filler only, and many holes will easily swallow a screw driver or wrench.
Jetzt hatte ich mich so auf den Elektroumbau konzentriert, dass ich den Gesamtzustand meiner Brotkiste schwer verdrängt hatte. Das war nicht sonderlich clever, denn all die Arbeit ist umsonst, wenn ich nicht die arm-langen Löcher geschweisst bekomme. Die Fotos geben das Drama kaum wieder, denn viele Löcher liegen noch unentdeckt unter kiloweise Spachtel.

What’s next – was nun?
I have a decision to make. Shall I abort here and junk the van? Or will I have it fixed to barely pass inspection and enjoy the car two years until the next inspection, wasting hundreds of hours of the conversion? Or shall I do it right, from the bottom up, have the car welded professionally and repainted.
Ich stehe vor einer schweren Entscheidung. Wir können das Experiment hier abbrechen und den Wagen verschrotten. Oder wir lassen ihn notdürftig schweissen, stecken nochmal ein paar hundert Stunden rein und bringen ihn durch den TÜV. Dann fällt er aber in ein paar Jahren in sich zusammen. Kein guter Werbeträger für die Marke. Oder ich mache es richtig, lassen den Wagen neu aufbauen, und baue dann eine richtig gute elektrischen Anlage ein.

I made up my mind. The van will not just be patched, but instead be taken apart completely. The eintire paint will be chemically removed, the tin will be treated with electrolytic paint. It will then be professionally welded all around and repainted in the original color. To keep the value of the vehicle, everything will be put together as if this was an original gasoline driving van. Nevertheless, the drive will be electric and modular, so it could eventually be removed without ruining the original car value.

Die Entscheidung ist gefallen. Der Bus wird nicht nur einfach geschweisst, sondern komplett zerlegt, im Tauchbad entlackt, chemisch neu aufgebaut, geschweisst und professionell lackiert. Danach wird er so wieder aufgebaut, dass ein Originalmotor eingebaut werden kann (Werterhalt). Hinein kommt aber ein Elektromotor, ohne das Originalfahrzeug zu zerstören.
